Dear CalAware Today Subscriber,

I’m counting on you to help realize our growth fund and its capacity building goals by reaching out to the next generation.

Thanks to your initial show of support we’ve been to able to satisfy our first goal—the $2,500 matching grant from the National Freedom of Information Coalition, to be used for an overdue updating of our four legal guidebooks.

The other goal is to enable us to partner with college and university journalism programs and law school public service clinics to enlist and train students in projects to:

  • audit and report on the compliance of local and state agencies and courts with the transparency rules they are bound by under the Brown Act, the Public Records Act and the First Amendment;
  • create a series of webinars—presented live and then recorded on our website—to train people of all ages, backgrounds and policy priorities how to find out what public officials and agencies are doing—or neglecting—to fulfill the trust that has been given them; and
  • continue to provide concerned or uncertain inquirers with the information, ideas, and resources they need to become engaged and confident citizens—and even civic leaders.

As I mentioned earlier, I’m having to retire from the daily routine as of January 1, but thanks to our Board and your support, that will make no difference in the quality of assistance CalAware offers to those who seek it, or its vigilance in the legislature and the courts to keep the laws protecting informed democracy strong—and complied with.

Meanwhile, please help us get students and other young people involved in our nonpartisan defense of the public’s right to know with whatever you think our work— past, present and planned, is worth. Send a check CalAware at 2216 Homewood Way, Carmichael CA 95608, or make your tax-deductible gift here.

Thank you, best wishes for an enjoyable holiday season with friends and family, and welcome to a copy of CalAware’s Community Watchdog.
